Soccer Camp

No, not me.  I’m not there.  My friends are.  Half the kids I know are at soccer camp this week.  They love it.  Great!

I said I didn’t want to sign up, and Mom said that was fine with her, that I could work in the garden while my friends were playing.  She’s got this thing about being self-sufficient, about home-grown food.

Mom said we should try to limit our food to whatever grows on the island, as much as we can.  And I guess that starts with growing our own veggies and fruit.

I wouldn’t mind it so much if we could sprinkle our garden the way we used to do it in Victoria.  But there’s this rule that we can’t water plants with the regular water.  Oh, no, I’m watering the roots of each, single plant – one-at-a-time!!!!

We’ve got this rain barrel.  It holds about ninety gazillion gallons of rain that comes from the roof every winter.  If you saw this barrel you wouldn’t  believe your eyes!  But the water has to last all summer, so Mom says, “Don’t waste a drop.  You know how many raindrops it takes to fill the tank?  Each one is precious!”
Anyway…….here I am, working in the garden while my friends are playing.  Maybe I’ll go to soccer camp next year.

Full Moon over Mayne

A light in my window woke me up.  I looked right into the face of the full moon.

Sport and I got up.  Sport’s  my neighbour’s dog but he’s staying with me for a while.  I wrapped my quilt around me and crept past Mom’s room.

Lying on the grass, looking up at the moon, I  could almost feel the roundness of the Earth, and thought how the moon and our planet are flying through space together, the little planet circling the bigger one, but both moving together on the same path.  It’s like Sport circling me when we walk.  He travels farther and faster as he circles me, stopping to sniff, then running ahead; but we travel together.

Fall Fair Parade on Mayne

It was Fun!  You should have been there.

It was our traditional Fall Fair today.

I always love to watch the parade.  Our RCMP constable led the parade.  The parade itself had floats that I really liked, like the one from the Thrift Store that showed a bit of everything they carry, like the print of a Vermeer painting.

There were stacks of paper, cans and bottles from the Recycling Centre.  One group represented the seaweed.  There was a donkey and a small horse, and even the quilters came out, showing off their own and their pets’ quilted fashions.

The parade was over so soon, I never had a chance to get bored.

You should really try to come here next year.  You’ll have a lot of fun.

Book Reviews

Hi again,

I just read that people sometimes write book reviews and  post them on blogs.  This would be a perfect place to post a review of Magda`s Mayne Island Mystery or Mayne Island Aliens.

Give it a try.  I`d love to hear what you think of them.

New Book

I guess you know that Amber Harvey is working on the third book about me, and that it involves some sleuthing I did.  I had a lot of fun doing some of it, but it was no fun when Brent got hurt.  I was really worried.  An I couldn’t talk to my friend Shauna because she was out on an icebreaker up north, with a scientific expedition.  they were studying polar bear populations.  And Jo and Rowan were being very bad friends for a while, so I was pretty much on my own, except, of course, for Sport.  I felt pretty bad for a while, but when I worked things out I felt pretty good!

Did you ever have a time when you had something important to do, and nobody could or would help?  What happened?  Please tell me about it.

Bye for now.  Magda Sommers

Following a hunch

Sometimes I just sense things, like when I thought the house was haunted.  I really had no reason to think it was, even though that was the rumour going round.  People whispered that a man had murdered his family there.  But when I went inside, into the cold, damp run-down house, I just had this feeling about it and had to find out the truth.  But that’s how I am.  If I have a feeling about something, I have to check it out and find out if it’s true.  And I can’t stop till I find out one way or another.  I wonder why that is.  Does this ever happen to you?

Miners’ Bay on Sunday

Hi again,

I finally found out when Amber will be telling (reading, actually) about my adventure in the haunted house ( Mayne Island Ghosts ) and the bones from the skeleton Sport and I dug up.  It’ll be at 1:05 this coming Sunday.

You might not see me, but I’ll be there.  Maybe I’ll be sitting right beside you and you’ll think I’m a tourist or someone’s granddaughter on the island for the summer.  But it’ll be me.  You might see Sport, too.

Now let’s hope it doesn’t rain.  If it does, I’ll be the one under the big tree, resting against my bike with my hoody up.  Say hi.

See you there.

Sunday reading

This should be a laugh!  Amber is going to read from her latest book about me on Sunday, sometime – nobody knows when, yet, or if they do they’re not telling!!!! Anyway, she’s going to read about the adventure I had where I found the bones that prove an old murder.  How do I let myself get into these predicaments???  LOL :)   Anyway, if you have some time on Sunday, get over to the park at Miner’s Bay and if you’re super lucky you might get there when she’s reading,  or NOT!!

Full Moon over Mayne

Anyone who’s read about me knows I love the night.  Well, last night was warm and clear and the full moon lit up the night sky.  I crept out when everyone for miles around was asleep and went for a bike ride.  Sport came with me.  We drove past the haunted house and I am certain I saw something moving, a light or a sort of glowing presence.  I kept on riding, though, because I just wanted to be out riding my bike, not exploring haunted houses.  I rode up to See Forever and watched the moon for a while.  I thought of all the fun my brother Tom and I used to have, and how it was so much fun to do things as a family, Dad, Mom, Tom and me.  I think Tom and Dad might be watching over me, because I felt a soft, warm wind against my face and felt so happy.

Then Sport and I turned around and went home.

New Website Name

Okay, you’ll like this.  Amber Harvey has changed the name of her website from “Amber’s Playground” to “Magda of Mayne Island: girl detective.”  Doesn’t that rock?

Go look at it if you don’t believe me!
